Choosing a Typeface to Tell a Story

The project was simple, on the surface. I needed a cover for a small, downloadable recipe ebook. The client wanted it to feel warm, trustworthy, a little nostalgic, and undeniably approachable. As I stared at the blank canvas in my design software, I knew the title font would set the entire tone. It was the first thing a potential reader would see, and it had to invite them into the world of home cooking without a single word of copy. That’s when I found My School.

The Character of a Friendly Font

From the first glance, My School possesses a distinct personality. It’s a script font, but it leans away from the formal elegance of calligraphy toward something more grounded and human. Its letters carry a playful, rounded quality, with a rhythm that feels steady and legible. There’s a warmth in its curves, a slight imperfection in its joins that suggests not digital precision, but thoughtful handwriting. The mood is educational, yes, but in the broadest, most generous sense: it feels instructive, guiding, and clear. For editorial design, this translates into an immediate sense of familiarity and trust.

This isn’t a font that shouts. It speaks calmly. In my recipe ebook cover, “Family Kitchen Traditions” rendered in My School didn’t feel like a loud brand slogan; it felt like a handwritten label on a well-loved cookbook pulled from a shelf. That’s its editorial appeal: it can transform a title from mere text into a visual entry point that carries emotion and intent.

Building Hierarchy with a Gentle Voice

In any publication, visual hierarchy is everything. It guides the reader’s eye, establishes importance, and creates a comfortable reading experience. My School excels as a voice for the top of that hierarchy. I used it for the ebook’s main title and, later, for chapter openers like “Soups & Stews” and “Sunday Morning Bakes.” In each instance, it clearly marked a new beginning, a section of importance, without overwhelming the serene layout.

For a lifestyle blog redesign, imagine My School as the blog’s name in the header. It establishes a friendly, content-focused identity from the moment a visitor arrives. In a digital magazine layout, it could beautifully handle feature article titles or pull quotes, giving those elements a distinct, quotable quality that stands out from the body text. In a newsletter graphic, it can make the newsletter’s name or a special announcement feel personal and direct, as if it’s being shared with a community rather than broadcast to a list.

Where It Lives Best in a Layout

Given its distinct style, My School is primarily a display font. It’s perfect for titles, subtitles, pull quotes, section headings, cover text, and decorative accents. Its strength is in making key phrases memorable and emotionally resonant. I wouldn’t set long body paragraphs with it—for that, you need a font optimized for extended reading at small sizes. But for those pivotal moments where you need to capture attention, set a mood, or brand a section, it’s an excellent choice.

Consider a coaching workbook. Using My School for the workbook’s title and for each module name (“Clarifying Your Vision,” “Building Your Plan”) immediately softens the potentially daunting nature of a workbook, making it feel more like a guided, personal journey. On a printable planner, using it for the month names or section headers (“Goals,” “Notes”) adds a touch of crafted care to a functional tool.

Readability in the Real World

A font must perform across mediums. On screens, especially in mobile layouts, My School’s clear letterforms and generous spacing maintain legibility when used at a sufficient size for headings. In PDF exports for ebooks or course materials, it renders cleanly, preserving its friendly character. For print materials, like actual printed guides or worksheets, its style translates beautifully to ink on paper, offering that tangible, human touch.

A crucial step before committing to any font in a project is to check its technical specs. For My School, I looked into its included styles, weights, and language support. Does it have the glyphs I need? Is it licensed for commercial use in my ebook, which will be a digital download? These practical considerations are part of responsible editorial design. A font is a design asset, and understanding its licensing and capabilities ensures it can reliably become part of your publication’s identity.

The Art of Pairing a Personality Font

No font lives alone in a layout. The true magic of editorial design often happens in pairing. My School, with its script personality, needs a calm, readable partner for body copy. In my recipe ebook, I paired it with a classic, unobtrusive serif font for the recipe instructions and introductions. The serif’s readability for long text complemented My School’s decorative title role perfectly.

For a more modern look, a clean sans serif font makes an excellent partner. The sans serif can handle body text, captions, and any navigational elements, providing a neutral foundation that lets My School shine as the expressive accent. This pairing strategy creates a cohesive yet dynamic page, where hierarchy is clear and the reading experience feels balanced and intentional.

A Font for Content Brands

Ultimately, a typeface like My School is about building a better reading experience. It’s a tool for bloggers, publishers, ebook creators, and independent content brands to communicate not just information, but tone. It supports publication identity by offering a consistent, memorable visual voice for headers and titles. It engages an audience by making the first visual impression warm, approachable, and distinct.

Whether you’re designing a wedding guide that needs to feel heartfelt and personal, a digital magazine feature that requires a standout title, or a newsletter header that aims to build a familiar connection with readers every week, the choice of a typeface is a foundational editorial decision. My School, with its friendly and educational character, offers a specific path: one of clarity, warmth, and guided storytelling. It turns a headline into an invitation, and that, in the end, is what thoughtful design for content is all about.
